A small, unassuming place.

It was during my travels that I first learned of such magics.

I have seen worlds where it exists, and others where it does not.

Are there people who possess unusual abilities in your world?

[ 'Super powers' isn't a familiar term to him. ]

Only one so far. My home appears to be the exception in this regard - many others here are from worlds where these abilities can hardly be called unusual.

Only by the sheer diversity. It's incredible.

Magic. The folklore and histories of other worlds.

The heart, as well, though I imagine there are certain mysteries that can never be completely understood.

Some mysteries are not meant to be understood. [Beat.] I'm a man of science, myself, though I enjoy reading about history and other cultures - other worlds, since coming here.

Indeed.

One can learn a great deal from studying history.

Did you specialize in a particular avenue of science?

[ He doesn't know that much about it, but he's kind of interested! After all, science is generally prevalent when magic is largely absent. ]

Relatively harmless, I should think.

[ So long as the unaffected ones are careful where they step. ]

Not at this moment. Have there been other floods like it?

Occasionally. There was at least once where people were turned into animals. Or into other people from our lives or world. Or makes changes in our personalities.

It is nice when they're mostly harmless.

I would imagine.

[ Turning into animals doesn't sound so bad...but the rest, hrm. ]

The first port I experienced was a far cry from harmless.

As was mine, if I remember right. Ports and floods can, unfortunately, be such a mixed bag.

Have you been a resident aboard this vessel long?

I've been here for... Over two years? Closer to three, I think.

[magisterus]

A fair stretch of time.

[ He knows time doesn't progress in his own world while he's here, but to be gone for so long... ]

Might I ask why?

Indeed it is and my inmate has been here longer than I have. I want to see him graduate and leave this place, or at least be set on the path to graduation. He's why I stay.
